About Joe Murphy
Born and raised on a dairy farm in Ballydesmond Co. Cork, Joe Murphy has over 40 years’ experience in the Dairy Industry. Having trained as a Milking Machine Technician in Teagasc Moorepark, Fermoy in the early 1970s, he established a Milking Machine Sales & Service Division in Ballyclough Co-Op (now Dairygold Co-Op) to cater for the ever-expanding dairy supply base throughout the Cork / Limerick / Clare area.
A keen focus on milk quality, combined with technical know-how was paramount when dealing with dairy farmers, and Joe had both in abundance. Be it improving milk quality or advising on milking equipment upgrades, he quickly established himself in the industry.
In 1978, Joe joined Packo Blackwater Ltd. (now Fullwood Packo) in Kanturk as a Sales Representative, promoting their vast range of milk cooling equipment throughout the country. In fact, Joe is still an active Sales Agent for Fullwood Packo in the Cork region today. His vast experience in dealing with dairy farmers whether it is advising on cooling or cleaning of milking equipment or dairy hygiene products, gives him a significant edge at farm level.
During the mid to late 1980s, Joe conceived an idea regarding an all-temperature liquid detergent steriliser for the automatic cleaning of milking machines and bulk milk tanks. After approaching Carbon Group Ltd with the concept, he worked closely with their Chemist and John Palmer of Teagasc, Moorepark, who was Head of Dairy Detergents Testing and Approval, and within 18 months, a new product was tested, approved and launched on the Irish Market. The new product called Avalksan, an all-temperature detergent steriliser revolutionised the application of dairy hygiene detergents and was the first universal liquid detergent for milking machines and bulk milk tank cleaning.
Joe went on to set up Care Chem Supplies Ltd in 1992 to promote and distribute Avalksan as well as a full range of dairy hygiene products to Co-Ops, Agribusinesses, Distributors and Dairy Farmers.
Whilst there are a few copies of the Avalksan product on the market today, Avalksan is the Number 1 choice by dairy farmers in Ireland. Avalksan is still to this day easy to use, and is simply the best detergent for Irish dairy farmers. With larger milking herds, larger milking machines and bulk milk tanks installed, automatic dosing of detergents became the norm which eliminated the handling of hazardous chemicals. Avalksan was way ahead in its concept and application which makes it the chosen leader in dairy hygiene today.
